ANGOLA:
Healthcare for 165,000 People in Angola
DECEMBER 21 , 2004

Since September 2004, Malteser International has been providing primary healthcare to refugees, internally displaced people and returnees in the southeast of Angola. In addition to supplying health facilities, and providing basic household supplies to those devastated by civil war, the population are being taught about nutrition and hygiene, and local healthcare workers are being trained to care for their own people. As with many projects carried out by the relief service of the Order of Malta, this work is being conducted together with local partners, in this case the Catholic Diocese of Kuando Kubango and the local Caritas organization

CROATIA:
Assisting Pilgrims in Medjugorje
November 25, 2004

Malteser International provided first aid and basic medical care to pilgrims from all over the world visiting Medjugorje this year. 4,116 pilgrims from 45 different countries were given aid during the course of their visit to this well known Marian shrine, including one Irish pilgrim whose life was saved by a Malteser International volunteer after suffering a heart attack.

AFGHANISTAN:
Malteser International Stays in Afghanistan after Two Employees are Killed
August 18, 2004

In a shocking demonstration of the risks faced by humanitarian workers trying to help those in need, two local employees of Malteser International were killed in Paktia, a region in the south-east of Afghanistan in which the Order of Malta has been active in relief work. “We are shocked by the assassination of our two Afghan colleagues,” said the president of Malteser Germany Dr. Constantin von Brandenstein-Zeppelin. “With their work they have improved the livelihood of many people in need. The repeated attacks against aid workers of humanitarian organisations limit the scope for effective assistance in the country.” In response to the killing, Malteser International closed down its operations in Pakyia and Paktika provinces, where the security situation has deteriorated.
